People, Career, & Biz Dev

1/ Transitioning veterans need to build a deep and broad network if they want to flourish professionally. This is why at The Military Veteran (a Context VC portfolio-backed company) we started civilian professional development events for military veterans who are now, or soon will be, civilian professionals.

I know these events can accelerate each veteran’s career and help them quickly build a network because hundreds of veterans who have attended our events have given us just that feedback in their after action reviews (AARs).

2/ I attend a lot of events. In fact I might be attending too many events. I’m even attending an event as I post this (I’m not kidding)!

I’ve been asked occasionally about my schedule and rather than break it down on a daily basis, I’ll zoom out and break it down into the following categories:

- Work/Build
- Preparing to meet people at meetings or conferences (Context Gathering)
- Meeting people or attending events (People, Career & Biz Dev)
- Following up on these meetings (my shorthand for this is FO as opposed to FU, lol but not lol)
- Think/Assess/Review
- Repeat the above

Going to events is a core part of my schedule. I go to many events because unfortunately, the vast majority of people don’t just share/volunteer opportunities randomly — I don’t think people are malicious, it's just that all of us are so darn busy. Imho the way to learn about opportunities is to hear and meet others in person. People are more likely to share opportunities in person or in a smaller/closed/intimate environment.

Additionally, events are one of the best ways to do people, career, & biz dev. Attention and time are scarce and fleeting. In person ensures that at least for a moment in time you can thoughtfully capture attention that can result in personal and professional growth.

3/ Our next event is The Military Veteran Transition Conference on 7/20-7/21 at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel in San Francisco. Brendan Aronson & I have requested/asked/begged many close friends & colleagues to speak at the event so other veterans can learn from their hard earned experiences and insights. Please see the image for some of these friends, mentors, etc…who will be sharing their journey from military to civilian workforce.

We hope to see you all in San Francisco on 7/20-7/21!
